While I agree with the conclusion that governments should develop a universal assistance programs that benefit low-income two-parent families as well as single mothers. I don’t agree with the stereo typing this book has on children of single mothers or single parents.
The book I am talking about is the Growing Up With A Single Parent Book: What Hurts, What Helps by Sara McLanahan Gary D Sandefur where it stressed that children of single parents are less successful than children of two-parent families.
“Nonwhite and white, rich and poor, born to an unwed mother or weathering divorce, over half of all children in the current generation will live in a single-parent family–and these children simply will not fare as well as their peers who live with both parents. This is the clear and urgent message of this powerful book. Based on four national surveys and drawing on more than a decade of research, Growing Up with a Single Parent sharply demonstrates the connection between family structure and a child’s prospects for success.”
I think the authors of this book is not a single parent and doesn’t have the right to write this book or give such generalization. Because I believe its not the parents to determine if their kids will be successful in their lives or not, its the kid himself. Its about upbringing and not the things a single parent or a two-parent can give the child.

I am a single mom of two, separated before my eldest reach 7 years old and i totally disagree with this book. The parents’ status does not and will not determine the success of the kids. It is the upbringing and all the love the parent can give, single or two-parent.
