I had a bonding time with my best friends for life last night and I had an awakening. They all envied my status as a single mom because I don’t have a husband and in-laws to worry about.
At first the lucky part don’t sink in much as I still have this feeling that people look down on me because I am a single mom. Its because of the stigma living in a Catholic dominated country where being an unwed mother is sinful and a disgrace to the society. But with the modern world realizing what the real world is like religious beliefs is forgotten the reality of life bites and marrying for the wrong reasons, i.e. because your pregnant, is more of a problem than a solution.
Honestly, I am happy with my status, I can do whatever I want without having to worry about someone to tell me I shouldn’t act that way because I am a married person. I don’t have to impress any in-laws and live with their standards and I don’t have to worry about sticking-up in a relationship that is already oppressing and depressing because of the children.
With all these realization, I understand why women in Canada would rather be single moms than get married. They know their rights and their worth and what they deserve. Because Canadian law strictly imposes the financial support of the biological dad of their kids, no ifs and buts, so they don’t have to starve to death or be in a very sorry situation.
Hooray for single moms!

I think that a lot of people do look down on single moms.
